How and when will human society collapse?

Went to a lunchtime talk by Aled Jones (head of the Global Sustainability Institute) on the question in the title. The take home message was the suggestion that global economic collapse might not be as far away as the 1950s (as predicted by 1972 Limits To Growth) but may happen within just 5 years.

Coupled with some of the stories from Emily’s talk yesterday from Kiribati, and reading a recent article by James Lovelock, doomsday in some ways seems imminent.

And yet it doesn’t seem as bad as all that from where I’m sitting… the human spirit of endeavour, the intrinsic values seemingly shared by most people, the idealism and drive of the amazing students I get to work with every day.

It ain’t over til it’s over right?!
